Boxing Club Going Strong in Cleburne

April 5, 2012 – Boxing, healthy eating and good grades are what the Johnson County Boxing Club promotes. Each Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6 – 8 p.m. one can find 75 – 85 people working out in the Kauffman Leadership Academy gym at 1108 N. Anglin, Cleburne. It’s free for all to come and watch or join in for a workout. 

Under the coaching of T. J. Terronez and Joe Reyes, several young boxers have won trophies. They held three tournaments in February. They have also done events to raise money for veterans and to send care packages to soldiers. 

The Boxing Club will host a USA Sanctioned boxing event July 7 – 8 with 35 fights a day. “We are expecting 300 – 500 people in Cleburne,” said Joe Reyes. 

“My attitude towards boxing has changed 100%,” said Greg Kauffman of Kauffman Leadership Academy after the boxing club presented their program at this month’s Cleburne Friends of the Cultural Arts meeting. “They coach boxing and they coach life.” Participation in the boxing club has grown by leaps and bounds after they moved to the Kauffman gym, the coaches said. 

“We are always open to sponsors for our events,” said Terronez, “but we want people to come and watch us work out first. We don’t just want the money, we want people to understand what we are doing.”

March 19, 2012 – Eight camera enthusiasts from this area won awards at last weekend’s photo contest. From Cleburne, Sam Fenstermacher, Ronnie Wiggin, Henry Long, Hayden Helmcamp and Jacob McConathy all won awards. From Covington, Peggy Cathey and Dan Cathey won awards, and from Grandview, Trey Johnson took first place in the Youth Division.

Cleburne Camera Club’s photo contest and exhibit March 17 and 18 drew 141 entries from 18 different cities and 200 attendees. Professional photographer Ed Barerra of Fort Worth judged the entries, which were tagged only with a number for the judging. Local merchants donated cash and prizes.

Winners are: First Place Adult Division, Hal Waller of Mansfield with “Pending Arrival,” a clever photo of a hand holding up an egg with a shadow of a person trying to get out. Hal also won second place with “Fish for Breakfast,” a photo of a sea bird feeding her young.

Other winners in the adult category were: Third place, Sam Fenstermacher of Cleburne with “Burger Bar,” a photo taken in downtown Cleburne; First Honorable Mention, Peggy Cathey of Covington with “Ready for Takeoff,” a closeup of an insect ready to fly; Second Honorable Mention, Ronnie Wiggin of Cleburne with “Snow Tree”; and Third Honorable Mention Jerri Myers of North Richland Hills with “Float Trip.”

Youth winners (below age 18) were Trey Johnson, Grandview, First Place with “Face to Face”; Hayden Helmcamp, Cleburne, with “Hope in Bastrop”; and Jacob McConathy, Cleburne, with “Martin”.

Cleburne Mayor Justin Hewlett gave the Mayor’s Choice prize to Dan Cathey of Covington for his “Reflections,” a clever photo of downtown Cleburne as reflected in a merchant window.

Attendees voted on a “People’s Choice” award, which went to Henry Long of Cleburne for “Morning on Mormon Row,” taken in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Bob Force, Master of Ceremonies and professional photographer himself, said “I was here during the judging and I can tell you that the judge looked closely and thoroughly at each photograph. He had a tough job.”

Henry Long, Cleburne Camera Club president, said “I was very proud of the excellent quality of the photographers, who demonstrated all types of digital techniques and creative subjects. Everyone attending the exhibit enjoyed the wide range of photographs from landscapes to portraits.”

Long continued “Cleburne is fortunate to have a venue such as the McGregor House to host cultural events which add to the quality of life in our city. I heard many positive comments from the photographers and visitors, expressing admiration of the finish and beauty of the McGregor House.

“I thank all of our sponsors for their support, the City of Cleburne , the Cleburne Chamber of Commerce, and all the hardworking Camera Club members, who helped make this Contest and Exhibit successful. We are looking forward to our Contest next year.” This is the second year of the contest. Last year’s contest drew 98 entries.

The Johnson County Art Guild will meet at Crossroads Church, 110 North Caddo Street on Thursday, November 3, at 7 p.m.

Tina Bohlman, a watercolorist, will demonstrate how she paints her award winning watercolors.  Tina, a native Texan, has earned more than 60 awards including a dozen First Place and four Best in Show titles.  She prefers to work in watercolors and occasionally in oil to create her breathtaking plein air paintings and brilliant rural landscapes.  Tina is the founder and chairman of the annual “Paint Historic Waxahachie.  She has memberships in Artists of Texas, Associate-Women Artist of the West, International Plein Air Painters, Landscape Artists International, Southwest Watercolor Society, Ellis County Art Association, DeSoto Art League, and Signature Membership in the Outdoor Painters Society.

Please plan to attend to enjoy the demo, fellowship, and refreshments.  You do not have to be a member of the JCAG to attend.  Everyone is welcome.

Jo Anne Burkett, First Place Winner of the Johnson County Art Guild’s October monthly mini art show, is a teacher at Cooke elementary school and paints to relax.  Her 16 X 20 oil painting is titled  “The Cooling Splash”.  This painting is exhibited at Studio Two, 511 North Main Street in Cleburne.

 Second Place Winner is Janet Graves.  Her 8 X 14 work of art is created with cross stitch and is titled “Jesus at Gethsemane”.  This work of art will be exhibited at Lemon Sisters Café and Bakery, 205 South Main Street in Cleburne.

 Third Place Winner is Mackenzie Pillow of Cleburne. Mackenzie, who is a high school senior and loves to do portraits, plans to pursue a career in art.  Her 20 X 24 oil painting is titled “Lady Ga Ga”. This painting will be exhibited at Plaza Theater, along with the JCAG’s art exhibit, at 111 South Main Street in Cleburne.

 Honorable Mention was awarded to James Haddock.   His 21 x 28 mixed media painting is titled “Burger Bar and Alley”.  He was inspired to do this painting because of the historical significance of
Cleburne’s Burger Bar.  This painting will be exhibited at Dance Across Cleburne,  210 North Main Street, Cleburne, along with the JCAG’s  art exhibit. James, an active member of the JCAG, is their publicity director.  He is also an active member in the Lake Granbury Art Association, the Arlington Visual Arts Association, and a Signature member of the Society of Watercolor artists in Fort Worth.

  The JCAG meets the First Thursday night of the month at Crossroads church, 110 North Caddo Street in Cleburne at 7 p.m.  Their next meeting will be November 3.

The speaker will be Betty Gosdin: Betty has been the Director of the Somervell County Heritage Center, Genealogy and Archives, for almost 17 years.  She opened the doors of the place in 1995. Betty graduated from Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas with a degree in Elementary Education, with a minor in History, a minor in English and a Kindergarten certificate.  She is a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century, and the Mayflower Society.  She is registrar for Colonial Dames and Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Vice Regent for her DAR Chapter, and a past member of the Board of Management for Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She is Chairman of the Glen Rose Planning and Zoning Committee, on the Glen Rose Preservation Board, past Chairman of the Executive Board of Directors of the Somervell County Senior Citizens Center, and Treasurer of her church.  She taught school for several years before becoming the Director of the Heritage Center.  

This Society meets  the second Thursday of each month, January thru November and helpful volunteers, are available on Tuesday mornings to help with your reseach and Library staff are helpful at other times.

The Johnson County Art Guild will meet at Crossroads Church, 110 North Caddo Street on Thursday, October 6, at 7 p.m. 

Donna Hornsby, a certified Zentangle teacher in the Fort Worth area will present the demo.  Zentangle is an easy to learn method of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns.  It is a fascinating new art form that is fun and relaxing.  It increases focus and creativity.  Zentangle provides artistic satisfaction and an increased sense of personal wellbeing.  Zentangle is enjoyed by a wide range of skills and ages and is used in many fields of interest. 

The meeting can be enjoyed by watching the demo and or participating in the activity.  To participate in the activity each person will need to purchase a kit for $3.  The kits will be available at the meeting.
